Captain John Fuqua

I was 5 years old when I started fishing with my father and at that time, we fished mainly for trout and bass. At age 11, I discovered saltwater fishing and loved it instantly.

I began working on boats out of San Pedro in the summers during high school, then full time after I graduated.

Mt first job was on the 65’ sportfishing vessel “Mustang”.  I worked on the boat from 1989 to 1995 as a deckhand.  The “Mustang” was spending the winters and springs in San Pedro and the summers and falls in San Diego. I went on to get my captain’s license in 1994 and then became the Captain of the “Mustang”, the last year before the boat was purchased by its current owners.

From 1995 to 1998 I worked on the 85’ Searcher and the 65’ Pegasus during the summers and falls in San Diego and did commercial squid fishing in the winters for a gentleman by the name of Don Brockman.  His light boats included   “Squid-a-lot, Donz Rig, and Nancy L.”  On these boats, we fished around Catalina and the Channel Islands.

In 1998 I took over the operator’s position on the 65’ sportfishing vessel “Cat Special” out of Cisco’s Sportfihing in Oxnard, CA.  During the six years I operated the “Cat Special”, I developed quite a loyal following. We were the high white seabass boat on the coast for 3 of 6 years I was there and we were also were the high boat for albacore all 6 years in the Channel Islands area.

In September 2004 my lovely wife Carol and I purchased the 45’ sportfishing vessel “Sea Jay” from Danny Oronoz. Since then, we have had a very successful charter business, and are looking forward to continual success on the “Sea Jay”.
